Architectural and Interior Photography | 2019

Brief to provide photography, interior and exterior, of residential architectural extensions in Aberdeen, by MAC Architects, designed to create open plan, light filled living spaces, that better connect interior and exterior areas.

Key features include the floor to ceiling, full width, glass doors which optimise natural light and greatly enhance the sense of space, with generous ceiling height. In addition, windows in each side wall and the ceiling skylight maximise natural light entering the room at different times of day.

The visual language appropriate for architectural photography requires a perceptive awareness of: space, flow, geometry, material, detail, colour and light, in order to best represent the unique experience of each project and tell the design story.

If you have an architectural project that you would like to represent through photography in order to promote in print or online, please contact me to discuss a brief.

Pricing structure for quantity of images is appropriate for situations where the subjects are in close proximity, such as the interior of a single dwelling / building.

Pricing structure as a day rate is appropriate for assignments where the scope is wider, where the setting up of shots requires a longer duration, or when for example exterior photographs require different light situations such as daylight and twilight.

  2. Full day (8 hours on site + post-production) £490

Each assignment is unique and the fee is dependent on the scope and scale of each assignment.

NOTES ON Copyright & a ‘Licence to Use’ images

A photographer’s fee includes the photography production, the post-production + a Licence to Use the images, under certain conditions.

Under the 1988 Copyright and Patents Act, a photographer retains copyright of all images that they produce, even when commissioned by a client.

A photographer will therefore provide a Licence to Use the images, under certain conditions, relating to: type of media (print, online), region, and duration of use.

The terms of the Licence to Use will be agreed with the client, to meet their needs for the images.

The Licence to Use is a significant factor that determines the photographer’s fee, because the usage of the images is what generates value to the client in terms of how widely the images will be seen and for how long. The exposure for their project.

Simply put, a client hires the images. A client will not own the images outright.

Further very brief notes on copyright at the end of Terms and Conditions.

Usually I provide an Licence to Use that allows for: unlimited media use, worldwide, in perpetuity.

A photographer credit is required when images are published in book form, or posted online within a website, or in an Instagram post.

Copyright remains with the photographer and further editing / manipulation of images is not permitted.

Nor is any third party usage permitted, unless requested in advance, and which may incur a separate fee.

Full details are outlined in Terms and Conditions.

If you have an architectural project that you would like to represent and promote in print or online, please contact me to discuss a brief and I will be happy to provide a tailored quote.

Visual Diary

In addition to providing photography for a completed project, I can provide work in progress photography.

Creating photography at various stages of the project to form a visual diary.

A visual diary may include photographs of important stages, techniques or materials, that are later covered or hidden in the completed structure.

A visual diary has value for many reasons including:

  1. A useful reference for future projects of processes that are no longer visible in the completed structure

  2. Providing important historical documentation reference material if the structure is a historical building and will be renovated or converted in some way

  3. An informative example for prospective clients who may require similar processes

  4. The compilation of a portfolio, or book form, in a coherent set of images, telling the full story of the project, either for new structures, or ‘before and after’ conversions

The number of visits required, aspects to cover and number of images would be discussed in advance in order to form a brief and a tailored quote, however the documentation process could remain flexible due to the nature of construction, especially conversion and restoration projects which can be more unpredictable.

Property Company Photography: Interior and Exterior Photography

Providing photography for estate agents to promote property for sale or rent requires a different approach to architectural photography and therefore has a different pricing structure.

The visual language / shot list is fairly conventional, and therefore the process is more swift.

The key objective is to best represent the space of the property, in a light and bright style, through wide angle views of each room, in addition to any unique features, in uncluttered, eye catching imagery.

Although a different approach stylistically, the attention to producing high quality imagery is the same including:

sharp focus, well composed images, natural colour rendition, exposure balance so that there is detail in the highlights and shadow areas and perspective control to ensure that vertical lines are upright and parallel.

Ultimately the prospective client needs to be able to get a positive feeling for what it would be like to be in the property, in order to motivate them into arranging a viewing.

Eye catching, high quality imagery will better reflect the quality of each property and your brand, and will stand out against other poor quality images, which will not attract prospective client interest in a competitive market.
